Have you ever been asked “What is a Quillon?” or wondered what a Quillon is? On a sword or knife the quillon is the crossguard that helps to keep your hand or fingers from moving off of the grip and on to the blade. After the Middle Ages, crossguards became more elaborate, forming the first quillons. Then came the addition of guard branches to offer more protection to the unarmored hand. Today many knives come with a single or double quillon. Here is an example of a double quillon.
